This survey for Kerr Wood Leidal (KWL) is taking place in Calgary, Alberta.

It began in 2017 and should be completed in 2021. The city of Calgary is committed to the conservation, protection and restoration of its natural spaces. At the confluence of two major rivers, the ecosystems along the banks are largely impacted by the complex interactions between natural environments and urban development. The Riparian Action Programme (RAP) has therefore been drawn up, and one of its key actions involves integrating plant engineering techniques into riverbank restoration.

In this context, André Évette was involved in the Bank Bioengineering Project Effectiveness Monitoring project, and after analysing the results, the experts made a number of recommendations, including

  • improve project documentation and data recording, to be shared with the RAP team. Projects cannot be supervised within the RMP framework without a common understanding of objectives, implementation and maintenance;
  • apply a soil improver to the cuttings. It has been shown that this action statistically improves growth (more cuttings survive).

The spin-offs of this expertise
will be :

  • A vast international dataset on plant engineering for riverbank protection, which could be enhanced by scientific articles;
  • A vast professional network in Quebec and Alberta with public administrations, researchers and consultancies;
  • numerous interdisciplinary exchanges with various scientists.
