Maria-Héléna Ramos – Head of Hydrology Research, HYCAR unit, INRAE(testimonial from the “30 years of research for flood prevention” dossier – 2022)

“My work focuses on river flow forecasting and flood warning. An engineer in Brazil, I obtained a doctorate in Grenoble and did a post-doctorate in Italy, at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, where I worked with the European flood warning system. These skills led me to conduct two major expert assessments on flood forecasting, one in Peru following the floods of 2017 via the European Commission and the United Nations, and the other initiated in 2021 with the World Meteorological Organisation on the forecasting of flash floods in West Africa. This expertise has enabled me to understand local issues and propose concrete solutions following discussions with the stakeholders concerned. My research has also been enriched by new ideas. Today, I enjoy training young scientists and leading the hydrological community, in particular through the HEPEX international network on global forecasting, and the European Geosciences Union, which has around 18,000 members from all over the world.

30 years of research into flood prevention

The risk of flooding is the leading natural hazard in France in terms of impact and extent. As experts in water-related risks, six INRAE scientific teams are helping to implement flood prevention policy. They are working on tools and methods for forecasting and preventing this risk, which are presented in this dossier.
